Summary
I have a degree in English Language and Literatures but a wider interest in the sciences. Except Physics. I have worked for an academic publisher in Oxford, where I learned my proofreading and copy-editing skills. I can, therefore, mark up hard copy using those lovely, more traditional proofreading marks.
I have also been an EFL and Business English teacher in Japan, Poland and Finland and am used to reading English written by speakers of other languages. In addition to this, I have recent experience of working with clinical researchers who are not accustomed to writing about their specialist subjects in English, and I have gained a lot of satisfaction from preparing their abstracts and articles for publication so that they can present their ideas in the best possible light.
I can also write using plain English. I should add that I am more confident in working with British-English, although that should not present a problem if I am proofreading.

If you are looking for someone who can bring a high level of constructive pedantry to checking grammar and punctuation, I would love to work with you. If English is not your first language, even better.
I am new to Elance and self-employment but have been taking on private work for years. I was prompted to offer these services full-time, rather than simply ranting about it to my friends, because of the amount of literature produced that clearly hasn't been checked. Proofreading should be seen as an investment, not an unnecessary expense.
I work 5 days a week, although this doesn't necessarily mean Monday to Friday, and my working days can be as long as they need to be in order to finish a project on time.
I have been on the receiving end of poor communication enough times not to inflict it on anyone else, so will always endeavour to give the best progress reports I can.

Payment Terms
I have no desire to price myself out of anyone's market, so try to charge according to task and circumstances.
For example, I charge students $15 per 1,000 words for essays and dissertations, with the added advantage that people can work out in advance how much the work will cost, regardless or what needs doing to it.
For business clients, I start at a minimum of $20 per hour and charge according to what is needed and how quickly, but would be prepared to negotiate a daily rate for larger projects.
Barring unforeseen events, I will never tell you that I can complete something in a given time if I can't.
I usually require payment within 30 days.
