Mountain View, Calif. – July 29, 2008 — MIT MBA student Ted Chan is taking a different approach to the traditional summer job search: he created his own job by launching not one, but two businesses with an army of on demand staff found through Elance, where businesses connect with professionals to get work done now. And while other students struggle with the economic conditions that have resulted in fewer MBA summer internships and full-time job offers, Chan is CEO of his career, thanks in large part, to his staff of remote workers.
“In light of the economic indicators, starting my own company while still a student was a fairly low risk proposition,” says Chan. “Late night conversations and research between classes quickly evolved into actionable plans for two businesses. The economics of hiring on demand really made it possible to launch my business.”
With seven years of IT consulting under his belt and a Project Management Institute (PMI) certification, Chan launched IT consulting firm DBL Partners (www.dblpartners.com). The second soon to be launched business, Olive Arbor (www.olivearbor.com), is an online aggregator of information on corporate responsibility.
In an effort to maximize his search for talent, Chan turned to Elance to find qualified professionals. In less than six months he built a strong business by adding a full team of “on demand” professionals to his existing team of three part-time professionals.
Chan is using Elance to work with web developers, graphic designers, marketing professionals and administrative staff. Elance provides Chan with the staff he needs to build and run his two businesses.
Working through Elance, Chan is able to interview and hire professionals online and delegate a variety of business critical tasks, leveraging the site’s collaboration tools. Prior to hiring, Chan is able to evaluate a professional’s certifications and work samples as well as review feedback from other buyers. “These are unique elements that make Elance stand head and shoulders above traditional job sites,” comments Chan.
With Elance, Ted Chan is able to run a successful business and still make it to class. The wide array of talent on the Elance site, along with its feature rich solution gives entrepreneurs the flexibility and time savings that make building a first-in-class business possible.
