Elance's service is free to employers and buyers. We generate revenue through Membership Fees paid by service providers on annual, quarterly or monthly bases, and through Project Fees which are deducted from each transaction. The Membership Fee contributes to the cost of maintaining and updating Elance's website, electronic workspace and collaboration tools, as well as marketing and distribution programs that bring potential employers and buyers to Elance. The Project Fee (which ranges from 6.75% to 8.75%) covers the costs associated with each transaction: billing and payment, including fees charged by the buyers' preferred payment service, verification, customer support, investigation and mediation services. New members are generally able to build a profitable presence on Elance within the first year, and virtually all established Elance providers generate significant revenue year after year; nevertheless, some new members do not succeed in the first year and let their membership expire. |
