Drawing/cartoon of river with two people in the water holding on for life!
This is a concept drawing, think of the thinking that goes into New Yorker cartoons. The New Yorker actually calls these cartoons idea drawings! Which is also a very good description: an idea drawing.
We are looking for a drawing/cartoon of a river full of (social) media brand icons Facebook, Twitter, Instagram etcetera with a boy on the left bank and a girl on the right bank, each with one hand holding on to a tree branch that is almost snapping off while holding their smartphone in the other hand and looking intently at their smartphone! (so they boy and the girl are separated by the river, each involved with their smartphones).
This river is full of water, force, wild and moving very fast and aggressively! These kids are in big danger!
Distress is on their faces subtly but clearly, they feel the danger but cannot help themselves, overcome by their smartphone addiction!
Second possible variation of the drawing is with a large waterfall at the end. (this is only an idea to consider if it works well visually)
The internal name of the drawing is: "drowning our youngsters with information."
The emotion and intent of the drawing should be clear but not over the top, leaving room for the viewer to project his of her emotions in to the drawing.
The young people should look sympathetic and likable, the viewer should care and worry about them. Age range I'd say between 12 and 16, their faces should look young and vulnerable and generate empathy (you want to protect them!).
We have yet to select a style, a new yorker cartoon style with subtle coloring is fine but we're open to whatever works :).
The social media icons should be selected based upon popularity (so the most dominant ones like Facebook are more present, think of:
(and other ones you know to be popular/recognizable and/or work well visually!)
Please show us the relevant parts of your portfolio. You can also make an example drawing of the direction you're thinking of. If we really like it we will give you the job!
This drawing/cartoon is about hyperconnectivity and constantly being online.
Modern companies are enamoured with Big Data. The problem with 'Big Data' is that there is a data flood going both ways. Our young people are drowning in information going in to their direction and losing themselves.
Another idea for an addition to the drawing/cartoon: on the horizon there could be a Cloud from which a lot of rain falls! (which is WHY the river is flowing so strongly, eventually swallowing the youngsters who lose control and will drown). The Cloud, of course, is also the metaphor for all the Servers in DataCenters on which Facebook, Twitter etc run their social networks! Conceptually this would be very strong :).
We are damaging the prefrontal cortexes of young people at a vulnerable time in their development (for instance, adolescents are still developing their prefrontal cortexes while actively using them) . This prefrontal cortex damage is the basis for information consumption habits and addiction behaviors that Facebook and its social media colleagues are making billions of dollars from.
And an additional idea to consider for a second drawing (to keep in the back of your mind for the first drawing):
- The same river in the 1970's (nostalgia for our target audience) with a boy and girl of the same age, now sitting along a normal, quiet river sitting together on the left side of the river reading a book. The scene is joyful, happy, quiet/serene and natural, in stark contrast with the picture of the wild river full of Social Media icons drowning the boy and girl!
- What has caused this: we call it Cognitive-climate Change, for people in the world their cognitive (or mental) climate has changed because of smartphones, tablets and 24/7 anywhere/everywhere superfast mobile internet!
