The Gothic begins with later-eighteenth-century writers' turn to the past; in the context of the Romantic period, the Gothic is, then, a type of imitation medievalism. When it was launched in the later eighteenth century, The Gothic featured accounts of terrifying experiences in ancient castles experiences connected with subterranean dungeons, secret passageways, flickering lamps, screams, moans, bloody hands, ghosts, graveyards, and the rest. By extension, it came to designate the macabre, mysterious, fantastic, supernatural, and, again, the terrifying, especially the pleasurably terrifying, in literature more generally. Closer to the present, one sees the Gothic pervading Victorian literature (for example, in the novels of Dickens and the Brontës), American fiction (from Poe and Hawthorne through Faulkner), and of course the films, television, and videos of our own (in this respect, not-so-modern) culture.
I am an avid reader of fiction and love to experience a story unfold smoothly. Errors in grammar, punctuation, word usage, and spelling pull your reader out of the story. Do you have a manuscript in need of an edit? Fiction or non-fiction, I can make it shine. An editor and published author, I'll pick up on how structure, plot, characters or argument can be improved, work with you on improving them, and help you turn your final draft into a polished, finished book. I offer editing in history, mystery and historical non-fiction, plus popular science and science fiction, drawing on degrees in both history and earth science and over a decade of experience on both sides of the publishing world. I've been editing, brainstorming, and solving plot, structure and character problems privately for over 12 years, and I also edit new titles for a small e-publishing startup. I've had four novels published by major houses and translated into foreign languages, and have had agents in London and/or New York continuously for fifteen years.
I am an experienced English-to-Russian and Russian-to-English translator, with a Ph.D. degree, as well as a language instructor, certified editor, and creative writer. My specific areas include fiction, history, criticism, astrology, medicine, and I always strive for perfection as an end product.
I'm a long time technology consultant and writer. I'm fluent in both French and English. Currently working on a start-up and working on short term gigs. The main technology I work with is Scala / Typesafe stack (Play framework 2, Akka). I love to read and write both fiction and non-fiction.
Based in the south of Dublin, I am a proof reader with a keen eye for detail and unwavering focus. I approach a project with the certainty that there is at least one mistake somewhere and it is up to me to find it. I am currently volunteering for Distributed Proofreaders in which I have proofread various different book genres from general fiction to autobiographies. I am working for a reasonable price not because I lack faith in my abilities, but because I am new to this website and I am looking for testimonials. With regards to my abilities, I give 100% to the projects I receive and I do my utmost to meet the requirements of the client. If you feel I am the proofreader you are looking for, please don't hesitate to hire me.
I learned English in Canada where I lived for nine years. I have worked as a professional copy editor and proofreader for more than 15 years. My clients come from small, family-owned businesses and large corporations. They are local fiction authors and high-end advertising agencies. Because there is more to a great document than perfect grammar and spelling, I do more than fix typos, punctuation errors, and grammatical mistakes. The presentation needs to be clear, the text fluid, and the message easily understood. The first step is correcting the basics. After that, I examine the structure of the sentences and the melody of the words. I polish what you have sent me¿but I do not change your tone. The work is yours. My clients are very happy, and are available for a reference should you need one.
