Tips for Crafting an Editor Job Description

Need an editor but don’t know where to start looking for one? Here are some tips and a sample job description you can tailor to find the best independent talent for your editing needs. 

What is an editor?

An editor is a professional responsible for polishing copy to produce high-quality written documents for publication on websites, blogs, white papers, reports, presentations, marketing brochures, and more. Editors must have a strong grasp of the English language (or other applicable languages), including proper grammar, word usage, spelling and punctuation, along with adhering to any applicable style guidelines for their clients. More experienced editors can edit for readability, tone and voice, organizational structure, holes in information, factual errors, and unnecessary words. A good editor can help make writers better through feedback and coaching and may instill confidence in the quality of content your audience is reading. General and niche publications hire editors to clean copy and work with writers to develop and produce quality copy. Wherever the written word is created, editors read it before it’s presented for consumption.

The job overview

Our investment business needs an independent contract editing professional to polish content for blogs, brochures, training materials, internal and external communications, and other written content. We seek a dedicated editor with proven experience in publishing to read copy written by other independent contractors and internal subject matter experts. Under the oversight of our marketing director, you will also be responsible for posting blogs to our website using WordPress and publishing social media posts from our executives to Facebook, Twitter, and Instagram. The contract length is for nine months, and the work should require an average of 15-20 hours per week, with room for adjustment, depending on the projects in motion. Knowledge of the real estate industry is a plus but not required.

Job responsibilities

Some of the editor’s job responsibilities include:  

  • Edit copy for our website, social media platforms, internal and external publications and communications, and more 
  • Ensure content is accurate and consistent with our brand voice, writing tone and style 
  • Ensure copy is free of grammar, spelling and punctuation errors
  • Ensure copy is well organized, complete and easy to read; consult with writers to suggest revisions when necessary
  • Optimize web copy using SEO best practices
  • Publish blogs to our website; post references to articles and executive posts to social media platforms 
  • Communicate effectively with our marketing director, writers and other stakeholders in the copy you edit 
  • Meet deadlines

Job qualifications 

Some of the editor’s job qualifications include:  

  • A bachelor's degree in English, journalism, or a related field
  • Two years of work experience as a copy editor or journalist
  • Impeccable attention to detail
  • Excellent knowledge of grammar (particularly syntax and agreement), spelling and punctuation 
  • Understanding of content editing, including how to most effectively structure content, streamline copy and eliminate holes
  • Ability to fact-check copy and identify potentially problematic information or statements 
  • Good interpersonal skills and communication skills to effectively collaborate with marketing director, and internal and external writers 
  • Knowledge of the Chicago Manual of Style
  • Knowledge of Google Search Console and Google Keyword Planner for SEO 
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Word; working knowledge of WordPress and social media platforms such as Facebook, Twitter, and Instagram
  • Good organizational skills
