In the automotive arena, there are a few popular ECUs/PCMs that are used in retrofitting applications. The basic is the GM 1227747, which uses a 2-pulse per shaft revolution VSS (vehicle speed sensor), and the 16197427 which uses 40 pulse per rev. Is is common to upgrade from the 1227747 to 16197427, but this creates a problem. The current solution is to install a gear plate and hall-effect sensor on the drive shaft. This runs ~$115 and is only a partial solution (no gear output)
Having a working VSS allows highway mode and DFCO (deceleration fuel cut off). Having the gear input allows IAC reset on the 16197427.
I would rather an Arduino-based solution that uses a Photo Interrupter ( such as GP1A57HRJ00F) which is driven by a gear on the speedometer cable (containing 40 slots).
