I am curious to know what exactly an employer is allowed / capable of looking into while conducting a background investigation for a prospective employee. I work in a very “Corporate” field and am considering opening a side business. I am concerned that a prospective employer's perception of my character will be skewed prior to any interview due to the specific industry the business will operate in.
Therefore, I would like to know the answers to the following questions:
What information is an employer capable of discovering about an employee?
If I run a privately owned business, what information can an employer discover about my business if the information is not provided to them?
-examples – who are my wholesalers, clients / customers, products, and income come to mind.
Is there anything I can do in order to help ensure privacy or increase the amount of confidentiality in both my personal and business life?
