Two new technologies make electric flight possible. They are the emergence of permanent magnet brush-less motors with their associated controllers, and lithium polymer batteries to provide the high currents needed with minimum weight. This combination of motor and batteries makes it possible to build electric aircraft, helicopters and quad copters, something that could only be achieved with great difficulty using earlier technologies such as brushed motors and nickel-cadmium batteries.
This project will look at the requirements to drive brushless motors, and produce a design for a controller using the microcontroller "IIC" (integrated interface control) bus. The controller can then be driven from the IIC ports on popular microcontrollers, for example the HS08, PIC and Arduino series.
