I use Adjacent Lists all the time to display hierarchical data using mySQL in my projects. Basically every single project i do i end up rewriting my own library to manage category lists - and while my work gets better, i hope i can pay someone professional to come up with a good way, if just to see another approach.
With Adjacent List i mean a database table that looks like this:
id(serial) | name(varchar) | sequence(int) | parent_id(int)
If its easier, a field called level(int) may be added to keep track of depth
A root category's parent_id is 0 or NULL.
The library or class, or even a set of clever helpers should:
- Work with Codeigniter and use ActiveRecord for fetching from the DB
- Be modular enough so that i can easily manage more than one table
- Use PHP to produce the category trees. Basically use PHP to perform all the functions that many would simply run Query after Query for, such as getting a Breadcrumb. My Table often has 500 - 1000 Categories 3 or more Levels deep...
