We have a router which is based on a proprietary BSD distribution. The router is used by government and commercial customers for mobile nomadic mesh with EVDO/LTE backhaul.
The router has a local 802.11a/b/g/n wireless AP interface, this is bridged to a hybid wireless mesh (802.11s) second interface which links any other routers at a site together. Then each router has a Pantech UML290 LTE/EVDO modem which connects to Verizon's LTE B13 network.On top of the layer 2 network we run the BATMAN (OLSR) layer 3 routing algorithm to find routes off the network. There are a couple of scripts running that check for the status of the default gateway using ping.
The result is a mesh network that users don't have to touch and will self configure, finding the best default gateway off the network, either local or over a peer mesh node.
We wanted to originally set the system up to roam between 3G EVDO and 4G LTE, but we did not have appropriate drivers, so we locked the modems to 3G and waited ...
