We have a membership based event registration website that was created in Php/MySql. It already sends transactional emails automatically. In addition, it has a custom mailing list feature for creating and sending emails to members. But due to limitations in this custom system (i.e. no email confirmation when joining the site, no opt-out feature or member self management, no member ability to designate what emails they wish to receive, etc) we began using MailChimp for our mailing list emails. The result is a very cumbersome sign up process for new members, with two forms to fill out, which I know is causing us to loose new members. I selected MailChimp over Constant Contact and many of the others because we need to be able to segment the membership quite a bit, sending only to certain cities and/or age groups, while also allowing members to select how often they want to hear from us, like only when new schedules are posted, or every time an upcoming dinner has open seats, etc.
