I run a popular cycling blog and recently hired someone to remove a hack located in wp_footer. This seems to have been removed only to return a few weeks later. The hack places links using a CSS "fix" style to locate them outside of the visible screen and therefore only visible to Google. This is placed on all pages of the site which call wp_footer.
