I have a system set up where I have pages I want to show clients and they are organised on our server using a conventional path system (root/directory/directory).

Thing is, I don't want the client to have to type in the whole path each time, so we set up a series of redirect instructions in our htaccess file to redirect   [obscured]  /filename to   [obscured]  /directory/directory/filename, like this:

RewriteEngine on
RewriteCond %{HTTP_HOST} ^domain\.com
RewriteRule ^(.*)$   [obscured]  /$1 [R=permanent,L]
RewriteRule ^filename/?$ directory/filename


That worked fine until we recently installed WordPress on the server which has written a load of its own stuff in the htaccess file. This seems to have broken the redirect function. I've found a workaround: if I put an empty directory with the same name as the 'filename' then it works but this is kind of pointless as I'm trying to avoid clutter at root level.
