Objectives: 1. Learn how to control/regulate/restrict network traffic of the following software: OpenVPN and all programs that are installed by Ubuntu by default 2. Specifically learn how to prevent programs from connecting to the internet when the VPN connection is suddenly lost/terminated and prevent DNS leaks 3. Specifically learn how to prevent DNS leaks when the VPN connection is suddenly lost/terminated You: A. Must be competent in Ubuntu 12.04 LTS and Debian 6.0.7 B. Must be competent in establishing firewall rules to control/regulate/restrict network traffic of software that accessed the internet. Such software include OpenVPN and those that are installed by Ubuntu by default. More specifically must be able to prevent programs from accessing the internet when the VPN connection is suddently lost/terminated and prevent DNS leaks. Tasks: I. You will need to provide me detailed instructions, occasionally step-by-step procedures, on how to achieve the above THREE objectives. Please do not reply if you are not comfortable teaching/guiding beginners of Ubuntu. II. I do not forsee that you will need to write/code new software. Ubuntu, Debian and OpenVPN are all open source. Background: I. My OS is Ubuntu 12.04 LTS, 64-bit. II. My computer connects to a central/main router. Many other computers connect to it too. III. As far as I know, the person who owns the router subscribes to an ADSL broadband plan with dynamic IP addresses (non-static IP subscription plans). IV. I subscribe to a commercial VPN service provider. It provides me the following files: ca.crt, ta.key and license.lic. V. I use OpenVPN client version 2.3.1 (community edition), 64-bit. VI. I have very little knowledge of Linux, Ubuntu, Debian.
