Safeguarding Downloadable Files
My Amazon S3 account contains files that my customers download via links provided on my site and/or in emails. To enable this, I have had to set the ACL settings to 'everyone' > 'read'. The links to the files are generic (i.e. many people are sent the same email and/or see the same page, which contain that same download link), so I cannot issue each customer an individual link (that expires). In other words, I need to be able to use just one download link per file, but somehow make sure it's secure.
However, I recently received an email from Amazon S3, recommending against this, "We typically recommend against anonymous list access. (...) With anonymous list access enabled, anyone (including users of these tools) may obtain a complete list of your bucket content. As a result of calls against your bucket, you may see unintended charges in your account."
