We came up with an idea for a politically-oriented jewelry item in 2010 and marketed it to limited success during that campaign season using Facebook ads. I am not sure if we broke even, but we did get over 3,200 "likes" and some great testimonials from well-known names. Customers were very impressed with the quality/price/value.
Some of the problems in 2010 were:
-We only had one product, a pair of earrings.
-We had a truly ugly website.
-We didn't know what we were doing on Facebook...our ads were haphazard and we didn't massage our followers
Some of the things we witnessed in 2010 were:
-We would place a fb ad and see an immediate purchase or two, and then nothing. We were still spending money on clicks, but our conversion would drop off a cliff. I know our conversion was not good in general because our site was so awful. But it doesn't explain the cliff-edge.
