I've seen chair lifts that go up down the side of stairs. Very bulky and ugly. I've seen personal elevators for homes...too big and ugly. I've seen straight vertical lifts used in construction to haul materials. ... crank, hydraulic, pulley, etc....
What I like to build is a lift that fits into a 3x3x10 foot max area. For 2 story homes. For use by people who have difficulty going up stairs. Or to move groceries and other things easily from one floor to the next. The gear, motor, etc sits on the floor. It can be as simple as an I- beam bolted to the floor with a chair attached...The floor of the lift/elevator sits/stops above the operating mechanisms. . One can step on to it and stand, or sit... Simple up or down switch. Load capacity 300 lbs. max. Lift moves straight up and down from first floor to second. Total up/down distance only 8-10 feet.
