The goal of this project is to determine if an accelerometer (another sensor can be suggested) can be used to detect a usage event for a drug delivery device. To prepare the device, a user rotates a cover on the device to open and moves a lever approximately 45 degrees. Following preparation, the device is used and the cover returned to its storage position. These events could be detected through built in sensors to detect the motion but this would require design, molding tool and regulatory changes.
The hypothesis to be tested is that if an accelerometer is mounted externally on the case of the device a unique signal would be generated during use that could be differentiated from other routine motion (e.g. removal from a medicine cabinet or carrying around in a backpack) such that usage could be detected and time stamped.
