The goal of this project is to rewrite an existing Fortran application (approx. 3300 lines) for the solution of partial differential equations (PDE) in python. Knowledge of PDE theory is not necessary as nothing new is going to be implemented. It is also preferred to use numpy wherever it is possible, in order to increase the performance of matrix-vector operations.
There are five test cases for which the new code should be tested and give the same results as the original one.
It should be noted that no linking of the Fortran code to python (for example with f2py) is desired, since there will be calls to python functions which will decrease the performance. So, the new code should be pure python with as much numpy as possible.
