This project is for the design of a 4-F grating compressor that can be used to pre-chirp an ultrafast pulse (100 fs) at 1560nm in order to compensate for 2 - 3 meters of single-mode polarization maintaining optical fiber. The objective is that the device to be designed should accept a free-space optical pulse, pre-chirp the pulse and couple it efficiently into a single mode polarization maintaining optical fiber such that when the pulse emerges at the other end of the fiber it is back to its (nearly) transform limited pulse duration.
I have attached two papers which discusses the 4-F compressor, though much of the discussion is centered around phase masking, which is unnecessary for our purpose (you can leave the phase masking out).
