Hey Elancers, This is my first time using the site and I need help! Here it goes: I am working on a research project and I need to do a statistical/textual analysis of a transcript . . . but a couple hundred of them. The transcripts come from Supreme Court oral arguments, and I basically want to detect and compile statistics on certain occurrences within the transcript. For example, rather than counting the number of words each Justice speaks and calculate a percentage of their speaking time, I'd like to automate that process. But that is a very simple example. More importantly, I'd like to automate the process of determining (1) when one Justice interrupts another or an advocate and (2) who is interrupting who. As you'll note in the attached transcript, the speakers are identified in all-caps (ex. JUSTICE SCALIA). When an interruption occurs, the transcript indicates it with "--" and then another speaker speaks. I've done some in R, but cannot find anything that can really do the kinds of discrete tasks I need to have done. I'm thinking maybe Python or creating some kind of JavaScript app that I can feed the transcripts into. Basically, I'd like to automate the whole process and kick out some stats at the end. I've attached a sample transcript for you to take a look at and see if this is feasible. These are PDFs, but are also available in XML format. Thanks!
