This project is for developing a simple proof of concept prototype of a handheld device. The device is a telescoping plunger that when pressed against compressible materials senses the applied force and distance the plunger travels into the material. A sensor on the upper end of the telescoping plunger changes electrical resistance over a range of applied forces (up to 5.0 kg/cm2, travel distance measured: 2 to 8 mm) The sensor is very small with two lead wires attached. The data sheet for it will be available upon the project start.
Deliverables for the project are CAD files, bill of materials, and drawings of the mechanical parts. This requires the specification of appropriate materials, off the shelf parts, tolerances and allowances for parts.
Parts that slide or move relative to the assembly must be reasonably free of friction. Support or orientation of the moving parts must also prohibit binding while the plunger travels linearly in its measure mode. Friction reducing s...
