After receiving a B.A. degree in English Composition from Barnard College in 1969, I began work as a medical editor and later was promoted to Manager of the Editorial Department at the W.B. Saunders Company in Philadelphia. I have since continued to work in this field and most recently was employed full time as a manuscript editor at the New England Journal of Medicine in Boston. I have edited hundreds of medical and scientific textbooks and journal articles and related materials (e.g., slide programs, white papers, doctoral theses, conference transcripts, and biographies of accomplished surgeons and physicians).

"If I had to risk a single definition of deconstruction, one as brief, elliptical and economical as a password, I would say simply and without overstatement: plus d'une langue - both more than a language and no more of a language." - Jacques Derrida
We now understand that there is no message that is not inherently determined by the medium of its transport. Even native speakers can't navigate their way around this puzzle. Native speaker translations fail by denying the vast ideological discrepancies that exist between languages. In general, I have found that their work reflects a constitutive dissymmetry in what must be an equal exchange -- one side is heavily relied upon at the cost of the other. We must defy the conventional wisdom that tells us to run to a native speaker every time there is a need for a translation. Rather, translation itself must first be understood before a translation can be successfully accomplished.
