Odds are you've seen the mobile device industry grow before your very eyes. Here on the Elance Blog, we've covered topics ranging from mobile gaming to UI/UX design for smartphones and tablets to mobile OS market share but do most of us really understand how widespread mobile has become?
We felt it was worth pulling some of the most relevant stats to the Elance skills community, and talk about what the numbers could mean going forward. Some of the key points from the presentation:
Not only is the use of mobile phones on the rise, but smartphones in particular are the fastest growing segment in the mobile phone space, checking in at over a quarter of all phones in the world.
What does this mean for elancers? A continued surge in demand for mobile app development for smartphones (iPhone and Android among others), mobile web designers to utilize larger and higher resolution screens, and more sophisticated UI/UX designers to take advantage of mobile touchscreens.
"By 2014, mobile internet should take over desktop internet usage"
If true, there are tremendous implications for the aforementioned mobile browsing, gaming, and UI. Apps will continue to be popular, as their relatively low costs are appealing to consumers opposed to traditonal desktop software. Geolocation and locality will continue to be hot buzzwords, as companies like Groupon, Foursquare and Yelp will use information on your location to target you as a consumer/user. Lastly, mobile advertisements will be increasingly leveraged in-apps, on browsers, through SMS, etc.
Facebook, Twitter, and YouTube are three of the big players in social media and networking, but there are many other services that are being used to promote e-commerce, business, trade and personal products, services and interests. For those utilizing them for business, hiring a social media expert on Elance can be a minimal investment that can potentially deliver great results due to the power of social media.
