Recapping Elance's Week in South AfricaGuest_Blogger | Mar 12, 2012
Kjetil J. Olsen is Elance's Vice President of Europe.
Recently I had the incredible opportunity to represent Elance in South Africa at a number of high-visibility events, including the Design Indaba Conference, the largest design conference and expo event in Africa, which was held in Cape Town from February 29th through March 4th . Elance was invited to participate in a series of events alongside First National Bank (FNB), which is PayPal’s official representative in South Africa, and we were eager to continue our relationship working with PayPal.
Earlier in the week, I had the honor of speaking at Digital Cowboys, a monthly forum for the digital marketing community in South Africa, where I introduced Elance to a community of freelancers, agencies and entrepreneurs in graphic design, ecommerce and marketing.
The next day, I spoke at the AAA School of Advertising, a leading South African school for creative talent in graphic design, copywriting and art direction, where I delivered a presentation to 60 students about how Elance is changing the global workforce, and how their careers would likely intersect with online, global work.
The actual Design Indaba Expo began on Friday, and having three days to interact with hundreds of the continent’s brightest graphic designers, advertisers, and creatives from film, music, fashion and visual arts meant we were able to really help educate many of them on the new opportunities they had working online with Elance, with clients from all over the world. Exhibitors were primarily design studios, craftsmen and service providers to the design community, and Elance was the only exhibitor in the work category.
I was joined by two local Elancers, Caroline (Cape Town) and Francois (Pretoria) to represent Elance at our stand, where we distributed flyers with 3 months of premium membership for contractors and $50 credit for clients to join our growing Elance platform.
Thanks to everyone who we met there, and to everyone who helped make this an incredible experience for Elance, especially our hosts at First National Bank/PayPal. It won’t be the last time you see us out in your country. Until then!
