Get What You Give

Mark Archer has been an Elance buyer since 2005, having posted dozens of projects and managed many different providers as a virtual boss.  Mark is also a former Navy fighter pilot, real estate investor, and now a serial entrepreneur.

I met Mark by accident during my first week at Elance when I called buyers to learn about their experiences on Elance.  During our conversation, I discovered that Mark really believes in the 'pay it forward' philosophy - something he calls, 'get what you give'.

"I love to share," said Mark, "because you only get what you give.

Mark applies the 'get what you give' philosophy to all of his projects on Elance, making him a great virtual boss.  And just like any great boss, Mark treats providers that work with him as though they are his own employees, caring for their well-being, making sure they are supported and ensuring they have the right direction.

Here are a few of the things Mark does to create a great relationship with providers:

  1. Pay vendors as quickly as possible.  "My vendors are hungry and working hard, and I know that if I pay quickly, they'll want to work with me again."
  2. Don't just take-take-take.  "When it's crunch time, and I have to go back to a provider for additional work, I have to work and make sure I don't just take energy away.  I need to keep providers motivated."
  3. Be descriptive and state your end goal.  "I'm really descriptive about what I want, and I clearly lay out what my end goal is.  This makes my project easier for a provider to complete."

Mark, thanks for sharing!
