This is for a real world job involving the repair of an I-Beam steel girder supporting an existing bridge. A vehicle passing under the bridge hit one of the girders, causing damage to the bottom flange. The plan is to have the lower half of the I-beam cut out over a 10 foot length. The total length of the beam is exactly 50 feet, 7 inches. The center of the 10 foot section to be cut out is 20 feet from one end of the beam (in other words, the cut out section begins 15 feet and ends 25 feet from the end). The existing beam is a W-shape 30x108. Once the 10 foot section is cut out, we will place a 10 foot long WT 15x54 shape beam in its place. We will then place 3/4 inch thick steel plates on both sides of the new section's web the entire length of the new section (say, 12 to 15 feet or so). 3/4 inch steel plates will also be bolted to the underside of the bottom flange at each of the two cut locations.
