Purpose: The purpose of this lab is to measure the diameter of the Moon and Sun by measuring digital images of them and using the known distance to each and the known characteristics of the digital image. The image of the Moon will be obtained using remote access to a series of robotic telescopes operated by the Harvard University observatory. The image of the Sun will be obtained from the Solar and Heliospheric Observatory (SOHO) satellite that NASA and the European Space Agency run jointly.
