Francine Blackwood-Mair trading as Black Wood Designs (Freelance Artist)
I started The Art Institute of Fort Lauderdale in September of 1986, and left there an Honour Student with a degree in Advertising Design. For one year I worked at various places in Miami, from an Awning Company drawing up plans, airbrushing carousel horses (yes the big carousel horses you ride on), Graphic Artist for the Reggae Report magazine to doing designs for a t-shirt company.
I came back home (to Jamaica) in 1989, energetic and optimistic, but still had very little experience in the field. So armed with hundreds (literally) of resumes and my portfolio (remember those, weighing about 30 lbs because everything was mounted on mat board and covered with amberlith) I went job hunting. It wasn't good at first, even though they were impressed by the fact that I went to school abroad and my portfolio was impressive, I didn't have enough experience working in an agency.
Finally, Marketing Counselors was the first to take a chance on an eager young artist. It was the Christmas season and they needed help with the rush. I worked there for 3 months, then moved on to Bunny Levy and Associates, this is where I got my best experience. Bunny Levy, known for his designs in the packaging world, taught me a lot.
