Business driven project / program management

Let's take a few real scenarios here to understand this better.
1. We know - 'everything with a priority 'High' or '1' is mandatory'. But what are the real prioritized 20% requirements that deliver 80% of the business value?

2. We know - 'we must focus on quality'. But isn't that the first thing to compromise on when it comes to an exchange between a list of pending features scope vs quality of the overall deliverable?

Given various such scenarios that I could describe the above from my experience, business driven focus allows us to implement and sustain with a focus on maximizing value at each step throughout planning, execution & control by
minimizing risks
delivering high value elements early - those 20% that deliver 80% of the value
identifying bottlenecks early and addressing them
making decisions to prioritize value-adding activities
utilizing a transparent approach right from the beginning building trust & rapport
embracing change into ongoing work
minimizing waste / non-value adding activities and address their handling

I recall one of the assignments, where using an out-of-the-box approach, cultural sensitivity, close & transparent collaboration with the customer, we have turned a large, multi-cultural, distributed project troubled in terms of cross-team & cultural collaboration (across geographies) and cost & schedule delays, onto a new leaf delivering on-time, within budget, with agreed quality and a happy & satisfied client.

Another assignment allowed successful turnaround of an organization in decay where creating structure, commitment, transparency and accountability from the entire distributed team allowed on-time, within approved budget & defect-free release. This also motivated the empowered team for more effective next releases given the constructive retrospective & actions. This was demonstrated well in the next release with before time, within budget and defect-free deliveries.

Interactive Workshops

Well, how does one prioritize among day-to-day activities in life? It is quite easy when you have to choose between attending an important conference call on your troubled project versus buying vegetables from the supermarket for dinner. You could always have dinner out at a restaurant or get a take out, right?
But what if you had to prioritize between attending an important conference call on your troubled project versus completing an RFP to be submitted later that night? Would you still not perform 1 before the other in some way?

The same explanation applies during project implementation - let's say for instance to requirements and their prioritization. All requirements cannot be prioritized as 'High'. One must find ways to prioritize a requirement over another using agreed models and approaches that allow clients / customers to get 80% of the value with 20% of the prioritized requirements and that too in shorter time-frames.

On the project coaching / shadow learning and / or separate workshops educate individuals and teams on such concepts and many more. For instance:

--How 'involving business members during requirements and then through iterations / sprints until an iteration demo / release is beneficial and not a waste of their time'?

--How 'addressing risk from the beginning and then on a daily focused basis, including risk actions in the iteration / sprint backlog is beneficial for all stakeholders and allows effective decision making at the right points in time'?

--How 'delivering 20% of requirements giving 80% business value allows a competitive edge for you'?

--How 'in this world of virtual teams can you still deliver successfully across cultures and geographies'?

My work as an Agile Coach, Consultant & practitioner in many assignments over years has provided immense value not only to the team but also to mid and senior management. In general, during my tenure at Nordea, Denmark, as Manager for applications within Private Banking and Savings, my approach has been business and risk driven allowing long term improvement in the business and IT processes themselves during the co-operation delivering short and long term business value. I had the pleasure to work for Sarika as her Test Manager on various projects in Nordea Bank. She is very professionally in handling both the IT resources and the business stakeholders . She had the capability to make both parties work as a team and she was excellent in communicating to both sides. She made a big effort in verifying expectations right from the beginning of a project and plan accordingly . Sarika is a very committed project manager which also affect the project-team effort in a positive way. She is able to bring out the best in people and also challenge you in order to deliver on time to the expected quality. I learned alot working with her and hope I will get the chance to work with her again – all the best for the future.

I have worked together with Sarika around a year in the initial stage after launch of Private Banking Portfolio and during the following stage of developing the product further. In her role as Application Manager she has contributed in a very positive way both in managing the support group for normal maintenance and in the development stage with her structured approach to milestone planning, budgeting and coordinating with stakeholders involved. Her energetic, organized and constructive way of working has made it easy for me to focus on product development from a business angle having full confidence in the fact that technical and administrative tasks are being taken care of in a very professional way. I give Sarika my strongest recommendation and would be pleased to work with her in the future.

Top qualities: Great Results, Good Value, High Integrity I had a chance to work with Sarika during setup of core system implementation project for insurance company – her capability to execute multiple tasks in parallel with expected quality and on time is admirable. Professional with open-minded approach and very efficient communication skills build on the ground of solid & robust project management knowledge and experience. She is not afraid to take charge and drive herself, her people or partners/clients to achieve the goals and targets. Sarika’s wide knowledge about various project delivery methods (with special attention to Agile approach) and cooperation with Indian delivery centre bring undisputed value to any IT-oriented initiative she’s involved into. I truly enjoyed our cooperation and I am looking forward to cooperate with Sarika in the future.
