I copy-edited this serious academic journal, founded in 1913, first of all when I was still in the Sudan and then on my return to UK. I only stopped, with regrets on both sides, when the combination of full-time work and a family prevented me from continuing.

Davis Test Examiner

Throughout the years when I was teaching in the Sudan, I also acted as Davis test examiner for Sudanese applicants to British Universities. The Davis test analysed their English language skills and advised on whether they needed further language preparation before entering their chosen course in the UK.

Teaching English and French to women who had been educated in Arabic and needed English for tertiary education, and writing all the teaching materials required. I supervised a number of dissertations, many of them on the specialist vocabulary of academic subjects.
I planned and supervised a three year research project on the teaching of core subjects to young adults which became the basis for the teaching materials that were produced and are still in use.
