All my work is done by me, personally, for the client. I do not use software editing tools and I do not sub-contract work.

British graduate, trained English language teacher, and qualified copy-editor who has worked in that capacity for an academic publisher (Oxford University Press), for an Oxford correspondence college (Wolsey Hall), and for an academic journal (Sudan Notes and Records).

Now living in a remote area and working as a full-time freelance editor.

I am a native speaker of English but am also proficient in translating, but not editing, Italian and French.

I worked in the dictionaries division of Oxford University Press, first as a proofreader and later as copy-editor of the Oxford Dictionaries. I later worked as copy-editor in OUP's history section.

Wolsey Hall produced written courses for distant learners. I edited and proofread all of these courses, covering a full range of academic subjects.
Sudan Notes and Records

I copy-edited this serious academic journal, founded in 1913, first of all when I was still in the Sudan and then on my return to UK. I only stopped, with regrets on both sides, when the combination of full-time work and a family prevented me from continuing.

Davis Test Examiner

Throughout the years when I was teaching in the Sudan, I also acted as Davis test examiner for Sudanese applicants to British Universities. The Davis test analysed their English language skills and advised on whether they needed further language preparation before entering their chosen course in the UK.

Teaching English and French to women who had been educated in Arabic and needed English for tertiary education, and writing all the teaching materials required. I supervised a number of dissertations, many of them on the specialist vocabulary of academic subjects. I planned and supervised a three year research project on the teaching of core subjects to young adults which became the basis for the teaching materials that were produced and are still in use.
