I have a lot of experience as a copy editor, and in particular, in editing manuscripts prepared by writers who are not proficient in English, or are not native speakers of the language.
Copy editing is geared to eliminating errors or gross errors that will stand out and be an embarrassment to the author. Content editing can be an option when the manuscript is already focused.
Content editing is a suitable option for those who have to write reports but do not have the time to organize and present their material for optimal effect. It can be useful for field-oriented professionals of NGOs, or of the UN or other such bodies. It is especially needed for textbook writing.
This option is suitable when a manuscript needs to be intensively worked on to give it a focus and readability it would otherwise lack.
It is also a suitable option for authors who want to reach a wide audience and not just their professional peers. The objective will be to make the manuscript intelligible to the average newspaper reader. Hence, technical concepts and terms will need to be explained, and the editor will ask the author queries to facilitate the process.
