Now retired, Brian earned a PhD in physics (U of Ill), and also has MS-level expertise in math. In the basic research group at Sandia Labs, he served as a general specialist, working on projects ranging from semiconductors and quantum computing to engineering failure analysis. He also practiced patent law and technology transfer at Sandia, becoming a US Patent Agent in the process. He also served as Director for NSF’s Materials Theory program, worked on the team who discovered the cause of the Columbia Shuttle accident, and founded a pharmaceutical research company. Brian is now a consultant in scientific research and patent law. He is also active as a science and legal writer, as well as serving as a consultant in science and engineering. In his spare time, Brian is an opera tenor, a ham radio operator, enjoys reading and writing sci-fi stories, and has worked as a lapidary/jeweler.
