I work with writers of a variety of skill levels and backgrounds - mostly novelists, but I have worked with academics and journalists as well....
Most editors wear a lot of hats. The hats I wear for any genre of writing are traditional line editing (focused on grammar, phrasing, and word mechanics) and content (coherence, transitions, believability, accuracy). For fiction writers, I also offer help with story development, if desired. For nonfiction, I specialize in structure and transitions, including pulling together things like blogs, journals, and letters into a coherent, well-structured whole.
Preferred genres of fiction are mysteries, suspense/thriller, historical, urban fantasy, YA, dystopian, and contemporary fiction. If you write in a genre I haven't listed, feel free to submit your proposal anyway!
Preferred fields of nonfiction are culture, lifestyle, politics, social science, history, philosophy, and biography/memoir, but I have also edited technical pieces for business/finance and economics. Depending on the type of editing desired, I may be able to help with science, health, and engineering as well, though in those fields I may not be able to provide technical feedback (outside of writing mechanics).
