I happily wear the hat of the "comma fascist" to set every detail exactly in place in a manuscript. One of my most challenging projects was a directory of over 1,500 environmental NGOs in eastern Europe and fSU countries for the Regional Environmental Center in Szentendre, Hungary. The source text was culled from existing sources and self-submitted by the individual organizations with regional formatting standards. Descriptive text was written by non-native English speakers from all of the different countries and varied wildly in understandability.
One of the challenges was to apply a coherent set of formatting rules onto the ordinarily simple elements such as addresses and telephone numbers, which in this case differed widely from country to country.
