I have been working in the non-profit sector for six years, handling primarily fundraising and programming duties. This includes extensive grant writing and grant searching experience, as well as writing press releases, marketing materials, and scripts for video and live presentations.
I started off in the field of journalism with college internships and freelance writing experience, culminating with the production of my own magazine, Off-Kilter, as a part of my Senior Independent Study project at The College of Wooster. I was in charge of every level of Off-Kilter's production, including conceptualization, research, interviews, writing, layout, design and distribution. I analyzed and wrote for a particular audience and kept that audience in mind throughout production. Working on Off-Kilter was an exercise in independence as I set my own deadlines and production schedule. After the magazine was printed, I conducted a focus group to analyze its success and was responsible for the distribution of 300 copies. I also wrote a critical introduction explaining my process and methods and exploring the role of a journalist in terms of literary theory. Article topics included a feminist analysis of ballet as an art form, the state of contemporary dance education, a dance review and an expose on laws that restrict dance in NYC night clubs.
