It seems as though a career in writing and editing was etched on my destiny long ago, though it took me awhile to get on this path. As a child, my mother and aunts grew tired of the way I constantly pointed out and corrected any flaws or flubs in their spoken language and I was told over and over that I should be a teacher or a writer. I then developed an interest in creative writing and started writing poetry and short stories.
As I got older, I became addicted to reading and devoured any and every book I could get my hands on. In fact, at the age of 12, I frightened my mother by coming to her and saying, "Mom, I have a problem." As I am her oldest child, she had no idea what to expect. She was so relieved that she laughed when I continued: "I've read every book we own at least twice. There's nothing left in this house for me to read!"
My reading habits have remained the same. At one point, I was reading a novel a day, and often marking the pages in pencil whenever I came across a typo or error that the editor or publisher missed.
Despite all of these clear signs, I remained oblivious to the fact that I was destined to be a writer and editor. Instead, I completed a couple of degrees from some prestigious schools and went on to teach English, ESL, and bilingual Spanish for several years.
