Overstrand Conservation Foundation
2011 - 2011
I worked as an Eco-Schools coordinator for the Overstrand Conservation Foundation (Whale Coast Conservation) in conjunction with the Wildlife & Environmental Society of Southern Africa. I worked with two local schools, assisting them to incorporate environmental education activities into the curriculum as part of the international Eco-Schools program funded by the World Wildlife Fund (WWF). Educational initiatives are not restricted to the school learning environment, but are also extended to include local communities. The focus is on cost effective eco-friendly, sustainable living that has a minimal impact on the environment. These schools are located within a biosphere reserve (Kogelberg Nature Reserve) with easy access to multiple ecosystems. These include the mountains of the Overberg, incorporating indigenous fynbos, forest, and coastal renosterveld biomes; freshwater systems, including rivers, wetlands and estuaries; and oceans, including rocky shore, sandy beach, and estuarine ecosystems. These natural resources are exploited to enhance the hands-on learning experience of the learners. While whales are a common sight in the sheltered bays and coves of our coastline, and there is much fun in spotting and identifying these magnificent creatures, the highlight is always an educational visit to our local mainland colony of endangered African penguins that are breeding at Bettys Bay - yes we are truly blessed :)
