This level of editing will focus on structure, style, and content. I will go through and flag specific problems such as structural difficulties, poor pacing, plot or conceptual inconsistencies, unrealistic dialogue, character weaknesses, and stylistic issues. I will provide notations on how to fix these issues, improve descriptive scenes, round out characters (or, kill off one or two), and highlight areas that need additional scenes or clarification, or mark sections that can be trimmed down to tighten the storyline.
This is editing at the sentence level, focusing on individual paragraph and sentence structure, word use, dialogue, scene descriptions, etc., to create a constant, smooth flow. A copy edit will follow focusing on grammar, spelling, and punctuation to create a print-ready piece.
