Transcribing and editing is a matter of personal style, and I recognize that variations in style will always exist. But there are some important guidelines to employ to produce a clean read.
I don't just transcribe and type the words. I care about the finished product; therefore, I do my best to make the document as readable and accurate as possible.
Unless otherwise specified by the client, my transcripts reflect the following format guidelines:
-Verdana (highly readable on screen and paper), 12 pt. font in Word
-Left justified and no indents
-1.15 line spacing and a blank line between paragraphs
-Two blank lines between speakers
-One space between sentences
-Page numbers at the bottom right-hand corner of all pages
-Document title at the upper left-hand corner of all pages
A good quality transcript begins with a good quality recording. It gives me great pleasure to be able to produce a good quality transcript. I make every effort to hear and understand what is said so as to eliminate as many indiscernible words as possible; but there will be times when I will not be able to do so especially with difficult audio which means background noise, speakers talking over each other, and muffled recordings.
To avoid creative transcription or "guessing," those words and phrases will be clearly marked, highlighted, and time stamped for easy editing.
If the project calls for a verbatim transcription, every word spoken including the speech disfluencies will be captured....
