Educated and savvy consumers recognize when web content is generic, overly-slick, or trying too hard to sell them something. And no one likes to feel like they're reading a sales pitch. If the writing is patronizing, or sounds like an infomercial-- if it doesn't offer something fresh and compelling-- most of us skip right past it.

In writing, as in most things, it's important to understand your limitations. I am not a slick, fast-talking marketing expert. I'm a hard-working, thorough and talented writer who believes that talent should be applied where it can do the most good... and not only where it can make the most money. I can craft compelling and intelligent language that helps people to learn and understand, or I can use fluid, evocative language that draws a reader in, and I genuinely enjoy polishing other people's language so that it better conveys their meaning. But (in the interest of full disclosure) I am quite hopeless at convincing people to buy things they neither want nor need. The life of an academic is, I'm afraid, ill-suited to a job in sales.
After 15 years studying and tutoring philosophy I've become adept at making complicated ideas accessible to a general audience. As an undergrad teaching assistant I spent two years editing and helping English students improve their written work, and as a tutor I helped high school students prepare for the written portion of their SATs and college applications. Wading through student papers has given me a special knack for distilling the meaning of other people's writing to make it more cohesive and elegant.
My articles, essays, poetry, academic and philosophical texts have appeared in both French and American publications, and I recently won the Greer-Hepburn Prize for Fiction.
