My company provides a Project Team approach consisting of a Project Manager, Developer Lead, and a Documenter that your Client Team will work directly with.
The Project Manager functions as you would expect a Project manager to function. They would be responsible for creating timelines and projecting cost and ensuring everything is progressing as the Project Plan dictates.
The Developer Lead functions as the architect of the Project. They will work directly with the Client Team to create a detailed Project Plan with specific Milestones setup at specific time points for additional payment. Furthermore, the Developer Lead splits up the Project Plan into Work Items and assigns those Work Items to the Specialized Development Team to perform parallel programming typically utilizing between three and eight developers per project.
The Documenter works directly with the Client Team to understand the clients' documentation requirements. The Documenter also performs all work flow mapping, process diagramming, create user and functional requirements and such things.
