You may be wondering what the heck a dramaturg is. That's okay! We in the theatre world are still trying to figure it out, too.
Dramaturgy has only been a recognized job in the theatre for the last 2.5 centuries or so. Trust me, this is a short time in theatre history terms, especially as compared with acting (the world's other oldest profession) or writing. In fact, directors have only emerged in the last century or so.
Anyways, the dramaturg functions in American theatres as a kind of creative guide for writers, directors, and company heads (artistic directors). They do anything from research about individual plays or playwrights for the director, to helping the theatre select its season of plays.
Dramaturgy's close cousin is literary management, which has also cropped up in theatre only in the last century or so. The literary manager (sometimes director of new play development) processes incoming scripts for the theatre he/she works for, maintains relationships between the theatre and writers, and advises the artistic director's season choices, amongst other things.
