Peter Guess

copy-editor and proofreader
  |  2:54 pm Local Time

Often it is difficult to be completely objective about your own work because you are so familiar and involved with it. If you are worried about embarrassing grammar slips, elusive typos or erratic punctuation, I can help. I am meticulous and tenacious about identifying tiny imperfections, the ones you know must be there, but can't find.

I would like you to be as confident as possible about publishing and proud to place your work on public view.

To ensure that your message is communicated clearly, concisely, consistently and correctly, I will identify and correct errors in grammar, punctuation, word usage, and typography. I aim to allow your work to reach its audience without distraction from the content.

I am a professionally qualified (Publishing Training Centre, London) native-English, freelance copy-editor and proofreader, and an associate of the London-based Society for Editors and Proofreaders.
Service Description

Mechanical editing

I will ensure conformity to and consistency with the editorial style of your choice (e.g., Chicago, AP, Oxford, APA, etc.). You may also have your own in-house style sheet or list of preferences; in either case, my job is to make sure these rules and conventions are applied consistently and rigorously. During mechanical editing, I address the following areas:

abbreviations and acronyms
special elements (headings, lists, tables, charts, graphs, etc.)
format of footnotes and end notes, in-text citation, and bibliographical referencing

Language editing

word usage
correct use of idioms
removal of ambiguity and bias

Correlation of elements

internal cross-references
table of contents
footnotes and end notes
checking captions against illustrations, tables, graphs, etc., and against the text

I will query obvious structural or organizational issues, and also basic factual inconsistencies and discrepancies.

Copyright and libel

I will flag any material that requires permission to publish, or that may be potentially libelous.

There is a certain amount of overlap between what a copy editor does and what a proofreader does; this is why both services are often offered by an individual editorial professional. Traditionally, proofreading is the final stage of the editorial process and can be seen as the author¿s last line of defense before releasing their work into the public domain.

Sometimes a manuscript will have been worked on by several different people -- developmental editor, copy-editor, designer -- and undergone multiple revisions by the author. It is my responsibility as a proofreader to catch any errors and blemishes which may have been missed or inadvertently introduced at previous stages of the editorial process.

If you are self-publishing, it is likely that you have taken your work to the point where you need a second pair of eyes to catch any errors or imperfections that have eluded you because of your inevitable familiarity and involvement with the project. This is where the services of a professional proofreader are the ideal choice.

At this point I am looking at the individual words, letters and punctuation marks rather than sentences and paragraphs; it is surprising how many errors emerge when you are forced to look at every single mark on the page . . . by reading backwards! Likewise, skimming through upside-down hard copy is a great way to spot errors in alignment and to catch orphaned fragments.

My aim is to produce an error-free, publication-ready text, but in reality no editorial process can consistently achieve this. Nevertheless, I have a proven track record of delivering copy which always meets the highest of professional standards.

Please note that as a copy-editor and proofreader, I do not offer the following services:

developmental editing
critical review

Payment Terms
My fees reflect industry rates, and fall within the guidelines set out by the Society for Editors and Proofreaders (UK) and the Editorial Freelancers' Association (US). Therefore, my terms are flexible to some extent.

I cannot start work on a project until Escrow funding is complete. This facility is in place to protect both parties to the contract, and I regret that I am unable to make exceptions.

My service is provided on a fixed-price, per-word basis only. Elance provides the option to offer hourly paid projects, and I am happy to accept these on the understanding that the project will be converted to its fixed-price equivalent.
