My recent work has been primarily in the spatial open-source area, focussing on design and development of PostGIS (spatially enabled PostgreSQL) databases from 9.0 onwards, and Spatialite database files.

OGR2OGR 'swiss army knife' usage, for all of the above.

Most of the data work completed with the aid of Aqua Data Studio (single licence from GeoSynergy on my advice), everything else with open-source and other freely available tools.
