I am a US-based designer and web developer with 15 years' experience, specializing in design for web, print, and brand building. I work with Wordpress, HTML, PHP, CSS, responsive design, and best practices for SEO and semantic markup.
I've been a designer and web developer for years and I have worked in a few different firms as designer, web developer, or creative director and have found in every case that the machine that is the company tends to be bloated and confused, and clients have always suffered for it. Since I made the choice to switch, I've worked freelance and it's been a great experience. I have the ability to get to know my clients, find out exactly what they want and work toward that end. Clients know exactly who they're dealing with and how to get in touch with me.
I also have the benefit of very little overhead, which gets passed along as a smaller fee to my clients. Hiring an experienced freelancer gets you the knowledge that a starving college student trying to build a resume doesn't have, and the ability to do big things on a smaller budget that going with a large design/marketing firm doesn't allow.
It's so easy being green! All client billing is done via web or emailed PDF (unless specifically requested otherwise). All of my own expenses are paid electronically, too. What about travel for meetings, you say? I am glad to pry myself away from my workspace to meet clients face to face, but 99% of my meetings are done via email, phone, or video chat. Pretty nifty, huh?
