“I was at no time offered more money for the work. To the contrary, I had to work night and day last weekend making changes to get the final $100 one month after the deadline, on top of already putting $1000 of my time into the ebook for a total (including the $100) of $500. The client presents himself as an expert in Halal investing with numerous accreditations. I do not write eBooks for non-professionals in the subject matter of the ebook. Therefore, I expected this project to proceed in the same manner as my other projects in which I am given some content and guidance from the client who is considered the expert on the subject. It was not only that the client did not provide a word of content or requested guidance on fine points of Shariah compliance, nor recommend one Halal investment, but he was disrespectful and exploitive. As one example, after refusing numerous requests for examples, he rejected my sample companies after all the financial ratios were worked out. My financial colleagues commended my work and said I did a very good job researching all the information, doing all the financial analysis, and positioning and writing the book. This was not a standard ebook. It required defining and demonstrating many financial ratios with no precedents or examples.
On top of all this extra work, he demanded a chapter on technical analysis (financial trading), with 8 different types of technical analysis shown and demonstrated with original charts, which in itself was another ebook. I consider my work writing over 50 pages of financial analysis and charts to have taken well over $1000 of my time, especially considering the changes in examples and other content after being approved. I have informed the client that the book still needs more work, in my estimation, but I have no more time to offer.
His statement that he offered me more money is absolutely not true, and what impelled me to write this response. His response to everything was, you must do this or it will affect my ability to the market the ebook. If I wanted to make a $10,000 return in real estate, I certainly could not do it with a $500 investment. There is too much exploitation of writers in the freelance market. I have retired from ebook writing after this project.”
