How to Grow Potted Rosemary

1. Purchase the following from a reputable store:
-Rosemary plant, checking it over first for bugs and also to make sure the leaves are bright green and healthy. (Creeping Rosemary is a fun variety for planters.)
-One terracotta pot that is big enough to hold the plant. The bigger the pot you can afford the better as this plant gets very large.
-Standard Mix potting soil of good quality. Or if you on a budget and must get the low-quality stuff, add in some horticultural or washed playground sand and make sure it is mixed in good.
-Pebbles or rocks, if you want the container to look especially spiffy.

2. Assemble all your supplies. Then, remove the rosemary from its container, gently breaking apart the exterior root ball. (This prevents it from becoming root-bound).

3. Fill the terracotta pot full of enough dirt or sand/dirt mix that the plant rests however high above the rim of the pot that you want it. Make sure the rosemary plant is centered then fill the sides with dirt.

4. If you have extra sand and bought pebbles you can top-dress the pot with those two things. This improves drainage.

5. Water it in good. Add more dirt or sand if needed.

6. Rosemary needs to be watered every other day in the summer, daily during heat waves, but can be watered as little as twice a week in the winter.

7. If you live in an area below Zone 7, bring the rosemary indoors for the winter. It needs lots of light so pick a sunny windowsill...
