“Wow. I was both dismayed and shocked to read this review. I normally would never participate in back and forth in situations like this one, but when harsh words are thrown at you, sometimes a response is simply needed.
I was asked to handle a hacked WordPress site for the Fussells. Turned out to be a very nasty infection, that had been going on for at least 6 or 7 months, sql injections, pharma-attacks and bandwidth hi-jacking, nasty stuff. Turned out to be much more work than initially though, MUCH more than initially thought. However, because I had mis-judged the depth of the issue, quite a common mishap with infections, I maintained the very minimal price, which was to cover about 4 days or less of work, even through a month or so of rebuilds, re-installs, re infestations and extensive security hardening were to ensue. Now, they also asked me to go ahead and do a complete rebuild, redesign and install during this as well. This would normally cost several hundreds of dollars, but since Mr. Fussell insisted, that they themselves would handle all style customizations, content additions, product additions, etc. and only wanted a WordPress install of an updated version (theirs was very badly out of date), a new theme and their existing products - and that was all, I gave them a price of only $100 - for a whole new website. I completely rid them of their infestation, I built them a brand new website, I did everything we agreed upon, and much, much more. Then when it came time to finish, it was not enough. They wanted heavy customizations, of fonts, logo, colors, textures, images, product variability, product attributes, etc. I gave this to them anyway, because I had a good repoire with them, we were friends, or so I thought. Phone calls that were supposed to be 15 minutes or 20 minutes long, turned into hours, several sometimes, the "cut-list", so-called, which was odd to me, as I had already done so much more than I was paid for, contained all sorts of issues, like a bad design on their logo they couldn't fix, (I had nothing to do with this logo, another contractor here designed it actually, they got a nice review too) small style customizations, errors within the theme they purchased, all sorts of issues. I was designing a very custom website for them, for free, just like I had worked for over a month on their infestation for free - a common trait among the Fussells as I learned. Unfortunately, people who refuse to pay fair money for work received, are just not really that fair in general, as this review unfortunately shows. After having provided heavy style customizations I was never paid for, heavy security protection I was never paid for, heavy image manipulations I was never paid for, training sessions lasting several hours I was never paid for, content manipulation I was never paid for, and much more of the same - I finally decided that surely, my duty was finished here. By the way, of all the free work The Fussells requested from me, a theme update and the repair of the logo I never touched or agreed or to work on - is all I did not complete for them, and the list of free work I did complete for them is about 10 times longer than that small list of two very small, 15 minute jobs that apparently warrant the review above - even in light of the hundreds of dollars of free work I gave them. I implore any contractors on here thinking of working with The Fussells, to decide to pass them up instead. While they can indeed become your friends very quick, as soon as the free work comes to an end, so will that friendship.
As far as schedule is concerned, all work that was paid for, was completed in the time frame promised - it was only all of the free work, that did take a little longer. I apologize, I just hadn't budgeted dozens of hours of free work into my time estimates. In hindsight, I think if I had perhaps not given so freely, they wouldn't have taken so freely. Lesson very well learned. ”
